Our Why

At The Light We Leave, we believe no child should have to face a parent's serious or terminal illness without support, connection, and the opportunity to preserve the love that will always remain.

Research shows that children who lose a parent are at increased risk for anxiety, depression, behavioral challenges, academic difficulties, and complicated grief that can continue into adulthood. Studies have found anxiety and depression to be among the most common mental health consequences following parental loss.

The emotional impact extends far beyond the initial loss. Children often experience fear, confusion, anger, loneliness, disrupted routines, sleep difficulties, and a loss of security during and after a parent's illness. Many revisit their grief at major life milestones, carrying the effects of that loss throughout their lives.

The Light We Leave was created to help change that story.

We exist to support families facing terminal or life-limiting illness by creating opportunities for connection, memory-making, legacy-building, and emotional support before loss occurs. Through family experiences, keepsake and legacy projects, educational resources, and community support, we help parents leave behind more than memories—we help them leave behind a lasting presence of love, guidance, and connection.

Because while we cannot change a family's diagnosis, we can help ensure that children carry forward stories, traditions, messages, and moments that remind them they are deeply loved.

The Light We Leave exists to help families create light in the midst of uncertainty—and to ensure that light continues to shine long after a loved one is gone. ✨
