Our Mission

When a parent receives a terminal or life-limiting diagnosis, children often begin grieving long before a loss occurs.
During this time, families are frequently surrounded by medical care and treatment resources, yet many lack the emotional, practical, and community support needed to navigate what everyday life becomes. Children may experience fear, confusion, uncertainty, and isolation as they try to make sense of changes within their family and the possibility of losing someone they love.
At the same time, the adults who care about them often feel unequipped to help. Friends, relatives, teachers, neighbors, and even professionals may care deeply but struggle to find the right words. Conversations about serious illness, death, and grief can feel uncomfortable or overwhelming, causing many people to avoid them altogether.
The result is that children are often left carrying questions, fears, and emotions without the guidance and support they need, while families continue managing daily responsibilities such as meals, childcare, appointments, routines, and the emotional weight of living with uncertainty.
While many grief programs begin after a death, few focus on supporting children, families, and communities during the period when a parent is still alive. There remains a significant gap between medical care and community care—a space where connection, preparation, practical support, and meaningful family experiences are desperately needed.
The Light We Leave exists to help bridge that gap, ensuring that no child or family has to walk through this journey alone.
