Hey there, hi there! I'm Kailee Lowe—a dweeby mother to two incredible children and a birth worker whose life's work has been centered around supporting families through life's most transformative moments.

In late 2024, my own family entered a season that changed everything. I was diagnosed with a severe disease and rapidly faced a terminal prognosis after exhausting available treatments. As a single mother of two young children, I found myself asking questions no parent should ever have to face:

How do I help my children understand what is happening?

How do I prepare them for uncertainty while protecting their sense of safety?

How do I preserve memories and connections for milestones I may not be here to see?
How do I manage daily life when I am physically limited and emotionally overwhelmed?

As I navigated anticipatory grief, I discovered a painful gap. Medical care focused on my illness. Grief support often began after loss. Very little financially feasible resources existed to help families - especially children - navigate the space in between: the uncertainty, fear, practical challenges, and heartbreaking decisions that come with serious illness.

I needed help preparing my children emotionally. I needed support creating legacy projects and preserving memories. I needed guidance on how to talk about serious illness with my children and how to help others talk with them, too. I needed support building a future for my children that I might not be present to see. Instead, I often found myself trying to figure it all out alone while simply surviving each day.

As my health declined, I became entirely dependent on others for even the most basic tasks and simple needs. I was so surprised and blessed to see our community eager to walk with us through this journey. I relied solely on our community to take care of me in my most intimate and vulnerable day to day moments - and to help take care of my children as well.

Everything often felt impossible and as talks with hospice had begun something remarkable happened at the very last moment... An unexpected treatment gave me something I never expected to have again: more time.

More time with my children.
More time to create memories.
More time to serve families.
More time to live.

More time to fight.

The Light We Leave was born from that gift.

Our mission is to support children and families facing serious illness, anticipatory grief, and loss through legacy-building, memory-making, emotional support, practical resources, and community connection. We believe children deserve support before loss, not only after. We believe parents deserve help preserving their stories, wisdom, and love while they are still here.

I was given more time, and I have chosen to use it helping other families facing the questions I once faced—and still continue to navigate today.

The Light We Leave honors the community that carried us, the faith that sustained me, and the belief that even in life's darkest moments, love, connection, and legacy endure.

Every parent leaves a legacy. Every life leaves a light. Every child deserves help carrying that light forward.
